About

Pack your tents and cozy socks for a weekend immersed in willow basket weaving with Jes Clark and The Rusty Anvil!

Jes Clark, the farmer and weaver at Willow Vale Farm in Stanfordville, NY, invites you to explore the rich history and healing properties of willow while learning new weaving techniques. With a deep connection to the land, Jes weaves traditional and contemporary functional pieces, each basket formed through a conversation with every stick of willow. All willow is grown without pesticides, embracing regenerative practices and loving care.

Teaching since 2018, Jes has shared their expertise with hundreds of students, ranging from beginners to experienced weavers. Workshops include notable events like the Stowe Basketry Festival, Northeast Basketmakers Guild, and private one-on-one tutorials.

In this 2-day workshop, participants will delve into traditional weaving techniques, crafting round baskets from willow. Beyond the functional aspect, the workshop explores the ancient relationship between humans and willow, delving into its roles as medicine, building material, and ecological partner across continents. Weaving techniques include pairing, waling, randing, and woven rod borders. These sturdy, functional baskets find use in foraging, harvesting, or as precious item holders. No prior weaving experience is necessary, but strong hands are essential, and all tools and materials will be provided.

Beyond weaving, Jes guides participants in exploring the emotional support offered by willow. Through writing, movement, and expression, the workshop becomes a holistic experience, tapping into the wisdom of willow as a teacher.

The Rusty Anvil is honored to host Jes on the land, providing a unique opportunity to learn and develop a meaningful relationship with willow. A heartfelt thank you to Jes for sharing their wisdom!
